A lean email hosting operation providing custom domain email to multiple businesses and startups, built on MXroute and Crossbox with IMAP bridging to Gmail for a seamless end-user experience.

Project Overview

Professional email on a custom domain is table stakes for any business, but the mainstream options — Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 — charge per-user fees that add up fast for early-stage startups and small businesses running multiple domains. I hit this problem myself and went looking for a better way.

MXroute offers bulk mailbox hosting at a flat rate regardless of how many domains or accounts you provision, and Crossbox provides a clean webmail interface on top of it. The tradeoff is straightforward: MXroute explicitly prohibits spam and cold outreach, which is a non-issue for businesses that just need reliable transactional and team email.

How It Works

The setup follows a simple but reliable chain:

1. DNS Configuration — MX records, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC entries are configured on each client's domain to route mail through MXroute's servers with proper authentication
2. MXroute Mailbox Provisioning — Mailboxes are created on MXroute's infrastructure, which handles delivery, storage, and spam filtering
3. Crossbox Webmail — Clients who prefer browser-based email get access to Crossbox, a modern webmail interface hosted alongside MXroute
4. IMAP-to-Gmail Bridge — For clients who live in Gmail, mailboxes are linked via IMAP so they can send and receive from their custom domain directly within the Gmail interface they already know

This means clients get the professionalism of a custom domain email without learning new tools or changing their workflow.

The Cost Argument

Traditional email hosting scales linearly — every new user on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 is another monthly charge. With MXroute's model, adding a new mailbox or an entirely new domain costs nothing extra. For a small business running 5-10 mailboxes across a couple of domains, the savings are significant.

The constraint — no bulk email or cold outreach — is actually a feature for most businesses. It keeps the shared IP reputation clean, which means better deliverability for everyone on the platform.

Growth Story

This wasn't planned as a service offering. I set it up for my own projects because the per-seat costs of mainstream providers didn't make sense when running multiple early-stage products. Clients saw the setup, asked about it, and demand grew organically from there. It's a straightforward example of solving your own problem first and finding that others have the same one.
